I took a stroll the other day with the plan to follow the sun. It was just after 4:30 pm so I anticipated following the Light until it shone no more. As I reached the Capitol courtyard, I bore witness to a dance I had seen countless times before, a dance thousands of years old.
Enjoy…
Have you ever passed a green field as the sun begins to set? You may notice the hundreds of birds, flying, chirping, singing. It is at times harmonic, often out of tune, but all the time beautiful.
Then, just as the last glimmer of Light creeps behind the trees. Silence. The rustling leaves no more. The birds’ chorus no more. Chaos followed by quiet. Light followed by darkness.
Why do the birds of the sky do this every day the sun stops shining? I asked this to myself as I watched them dance this cold winter day. Is it the fear of the darkness? The unknown that comes with the passing Light, the ensuing night? Is it to call their friends to return to safety for the still night ahead?
As the calmness fills the air, the moon and its accompanying stars begin to shine. Looking up in its vastness there are even more questions, so much more uncertainty. What is beyond the stars? What is powering its Light?
But there is something interesting about this eerie quiet. Around the bend, just as the sun sets, it begins to rise elsewhere. And with this rise, a new tune commences. This one is softer, sweeter, and gentler than the last. The birds have awoken, the sun is shining once more.
You see, there is much we can learn from the daily dance our friends in the sky perform for us. In life, we are constantly faced with new challenges. The moments leading up to them are often chaotic, sometimes clear, most of the time confusing. This may take the form of a new job, a new home, a new relationship, or a new beginning. And in these new experiences, there is a darkness that often follows suit. Am I making the right decision? Is this the correct path? The Light is so hard to see, but it slowly begins to shine like the stars in the sky. As we progress through our journey there comes clarity and peace, just like the rising sun and soft chirps of the morning birds.
Indeed, we are often faced with impending or present darkness. Though we should be certain that just as the sun shines forth each and every day, so too will the Light shine in our lives. While some days the Light may shine brighter than others, nevertheless it will shine.
